Spam is the term used on Internet to refer to a unsolicited message (also known as UCE, unsolicited commercial e-mail). Most spam is commercial advertising sent to e-mail addresses. There are also spams in guestbooks, forums, groups and on every way the Internet allows people to communicate and to post messages.
The e-mail spam is widely used because there is almost no cost to the sender, because most costs are paid by the recipient and by the carriers.
These messages could be even more harmful, as instead of a commercial content they could spread phishing attempts, attach trojan horses, viruses and much more - the spammer's mind is the limit.
Spammers usually get the e-mail addresses of the victims or by using spider robots that crawls the web and catches addresses or by buying lists with tons of e-mail addresses. So, users should not make their e-mail addresses public and should not fill any form without reading the site's privacy policy.
Peploe should also never click on any link inserted on a spam message, even if the links says the user would be unsubscribed, and a spam message should also never be replied, as the reply confirms the sender that the recipient's address is valid.
Some countries already have laws against spam, but the messages are sent from computers all over the globe, turning tracking and prosecuting a hard task for authorities - note that most countries don't have laws against spam. Knowing this, the best way to prevent spam is by not endorsing anything related to this activity and by protecting your server from being used for spamming and, specially, by not supporting companies that spams people.
